What is the TENGA Self-Pleasure Report?

We started the TENGA Self-Pleasure Reports in 2015 as a way to celebrate Masturbation May - an annual self-pleasure movement - with our "United State(s) of Masturbation" survey. Since then, we have surveyed numerous countries and found out about the masturbation habits of people around the world.

This year marks not only the 5th year of the TENGA Self-Pleasure Report, but it's also TENGA's 15th year since launch, as well as the 25th anniversary of Masturbation May!

TENGA Self-Pleasure Report 2020

This year we surveyed over 5,000 men and women aged between 18-54 across 5 countries, with 1,000 in the US alone. The deep dive about their habits related to sex, masturbation and sex toy usage revealed some pleasant results that make us confident in saying - America is becoming more open towards masturbation and sexuality!

In our five years of tracking the perceptions of masturbation, we can see a clear positive shift in attitudes: Americans are more open to discussing masturbation with their loved ones, are more likely to use masturbation as a form of self-care, and are using sex toys more and more!

With more than 80% of Americans considering masturbation to be a form of self-care, many used self-pleasure as a coping mechanism to deal with the stress of COVID-19. Data shows that 10% of US adults purchased additional sex toys in anticipation of self-quarantine, and a majority (71%) agree that sexual pleasure helped them feel better or acted as a form of ‘self-care’ during self-isolation. An impressive 37% have increased their frequency of self-pleasure during self-quarantine.

While the pandemic has kept Americans socially distanced, it will likely have lasting positive effects on the way society views masturbation and sex toys. Nearly 30% have shifted their views on sex toys and masturbation to a more positive one, and over 60% plan to continue increased use of their sex toys post-pandemic!

At TENGA, we want to encourage everyone to have more pleasurable sex lives – solo or partnered. We are thrilled to see how many people are trying something new, taking care of their own well-being, and enjoying the benefits of the pleasure this brings.
